Had some home shucked local oysters last night. Bought them off the dock so almost zero carbon footprint. Also had Kerala-style fish curry made with salmon that was captured off Faroe Islands and came to our plate from far far away with a huge carbon footprint.

Some changes are being announced at work. Some reorganization and some layoffs. A few people that I worked with over the years will lose their jobs. Most of them have worked for 20+ years and are at a place where they are thinking of retiring soon. This gives them a great boost. The severance package is quite nice. A much better deal than if they had retired voluntarily. It is bad to see all the talent and expertise gone from the company but I am happy (jealous) for them.

Sunrise seen from my exercise bike.

Comet C2022 E3 (ZTF) is still a little fuzzball through 70 mm camera lens. Hopefully it will get brighter in coming days.

This article just doesn’t seem right. Wonder if it was sponsored by the single use coffee pod industry.

The surprising environmental benefits of single-use coffee pods

Today’s New Yorker cartoon.

Last night, my son sent out his last two college applications. After a lot of blood, sweat, tears and pulling hair, we are finally done with this process. There is nothing more he/we can do about it. Now, the waiting game begins.

Watched Glass Onion. It was excellent! Loved it!

All the green moss on the ground grabbed my attention on today’s forest bathing hike. Such a stark contrast to the leafless barren trees.

At the first home meet for high school boys swim team. Has been almost one year since I officiated a meet. This is going to be a little stressful.

Elephant trunk nebula is one of my most favorite targets for astrophotography. This star forming region in Cepheus is about 3000 light years away. The elephant trunk contains several “young” stars that are less than 100,000 years old. This is ~2 hour long exposure (25x5 min).

Back in Sep2021, saw that Paypal was offering cryptos. Bought some with play money. In late 2021, it had gone up by more than 50%. Yesterday, I sold them at 66% loss. Do they send out 1099 forms for cryptocurrency “investments”? Does anyone here have experience dealing with this?

Roads - built for going quickly from place A to place B.

Streets - places to go to for shops, restaurants etc.

Stroads - the hellscape that is American suburbia formed by combining streets and roads.

After hearing a feature on NPR this morning, I am again getting excited about the annular solar eclipse later this year. It will be great to travel some place in New Mexico or Texas to experience the ring of fire. The next total solar eclipse will be on April 8, 2024 visible from right here in New England. So exciting!!!

My son wanted his baby picture for the school yearbook. After some digging around, I thought this was the best photo. Here is my seventeen year old, 16 years ago.

Watched a few minutes of “Golden Globes” last night where they announced 3 awards. I had not heard of a single movie title that was mentioned. How am I so completely disconnected from Hollywood?

Lobster trap tree in Stonington, CT. The tree is made by stacking lobster traps and the ornaments are those buoys painted by artists and children. They are auctioned off to raise money for local charities.

Listened to Nikole Hannah-Jones talk at a work event on diversity, equity and inclusion. She is an impressive, powerful speaker.

Something I learned today was really disturbing. Children of enslaved women were slaves irrespective of who their father was. Having more slaves was basically having more wealth. The white slaveowners were producing more wealth through rape but it was all legal because it wasn’t a crime to rape enslaved women. Even founding father, Thomas Jefferson treated his own children (born to his slaves) as slaves.

I have to read her ‘1619 project’ book but, it is even easier to learn about it. There is a 6 part TV documentary series based on this book coming to Hulu on January 26.
